About this tour

Kenya’s first kaya (sacred forest) to welcome visitors is the Digo tribe’s Kaya Kinondo, located just behind Kinondo Beach at the southern end of Diani Beach. Kaya Kinondo was first inhabited by the Digo people in 1560 and later abandoned as a village site in 1880.

Highlights

  • Before your forest walk, spend a few minutes at the Interpretation Centre by the entrance an excellent introduction to the forest’s cultural and spiritual significance.
  • Visitors must be accompanied by a local Digo guide from the centre (independent exploration is not allowed) and are provided with a traditional kaniki (indigo-dyed sarong) to wear during the walk. Photography is encouraged except near grave sites, and visitors are asked to behave respectfully — the kaya is considered sacred. Think of it as being in a church or mosque: move calmly, avoid loud talk, and show reverence for nature.
  • Once inside, the forest canopy creates a cool, mystical atmosphere. You’ll walk among towering trees, twisted roots, and lush vegetation, guided through stories, legends, and the community’s deep relationship with nature.
  • The tour also has a lighter side — your guide will share fascinating tales about local herbal medicine, aphrodisiac plants (“herbal Viagra”), and remedies for back pain in pregnant women. Wildlife sightings may include monkeys, fiery red squirrels, giant millipedes, butterflies, and occasionally the elusive elephant shrew.
