ELKY KAYA KINONDO SACRED FOREST 3HRS TOUR

Before your forest walk, spend a few minutes at the Interpretation Centre by the entrance — an excellent introduction to the forest’s cultural and spiritual significance.

Visitors must be accompanied by a local Digo guide from the centre (independent exploration is not allowed) and are provided with a traditional kaniki (indigo-dyed sarong) to wear during the walk. Photography is encouraged except near grave sites, and visitors are asked to behave respectfully — the kaya is considered sacred. Think of it as being in a church or mosque: move calmly, avoid loud talk, and show reverence for nature.

Once inside, the forest canopy creates a cool, mystical atmosphere. You’ll walk among towering trees, twisted roots, and lush vegetation, guided through stories, legends, and the community’s deep relationship with nature.

The tour also has a lighter side — your guide will share fascinating tales about local herbal medicine, aphrodisiac plants (“herbal Viagra”), and remedies for back pain in pregnant women. Wildlife sightings may include monkeys, fiery red squirrels, giant millipedes, butterflies, and occasionally the elusive elephant shrew.

Elky Fikirini Sister Caves – Three Sister Caves Tour

Highlights of the Three Caves:
Mdenyenye Cave
The largest of the three, this cave served as a hideout for villagers during the era of slave traders. It’s accessed through a collapsed doline via a wooden staircase. The name Mdenyenye comes from the Tswaka word for climbing or descending by rope or hanging roots.

Pangani Cave
A sacred spiritual site for the local Tswaka community. It’s steeped in legend, including the SmileFar Connection—a tale suggesting a possible underground link to Shimoni Caves 5 km away (not yet confirmed by explorers).

Kisimani Cave
Famous for its ever-flowing freshwater well, crucial for both people and wildlife. The cave is inhabited by monkeys, baboons, and a large bat population.

Wildlife & Safety
These caves host one of Africa’s largest bat colonies, with over 40,000 bats including:
Egyptian fruit bats
Common bent-wing bats
Long-fingered bats
Tomb bats
Angle-faced bats
The bats are harmless and navigate using ultrasonic radar, but masks are recommended inside the caves to protect from histoplasmosis, a rare airborne illness sometimes found in caves.

The surrounding Tswaka (Fikirini) village is historically important to the Digo people. A local community-based organization manages tourism here. Guided visits are strongly recommended—not just for safety, but also for a rich storytelling experience.
